Carhartt fabrics decoded: duck canvas, Rugged Flex and Rain Defender

Carhartt name their fabric technologies on the label. What 12-ounce duck actually is, what Rugged Flex and Rain Defender do and how to size a jacket that goes over work layers.

Carhartt fabrics decoded: duck canvas, Rugged Flex and Rain Defender

Carhartt put their fabric technology on the label, which makes the range easy to choose from once you know what the names mean.

Duck is the foundation. It is a tightly woven cotton canvas, and the weight tells you the grade — the jackets and vests we stock are cut from 12-ounce washed duck, which means twelve ounces of cotton per square yard. It is stiff on day one, softens with wear and shrugs off scuffs, sparks and rough handling in a way lighter fabrics cannot. The Bartlett Washed Duck Jacket adds a sherpa lining for cold mornings; the Bib-Brace Overalls are the same fabric doing the classic job.

Rugged Flex is Carhartt's stretch engineering: fabric built to stretch, recover and keep its shape instead of bagging out at the knees and elbows. If a jacket or trouser carries the Rugged Flex name, it moves with you and returns to size.

Rain Defender is a durable water-repellent finish. Light rain beads and rolls off instead of soaking in, and the fabric dries fast when it does wet out. Storm Defender is the step up — a waterproof membrane that blocks rain outright while still letting sweat escape. Rain Defender for showers and drizzle, Storm Defender for a day working in the wet.

Sizing runs generous because the cuts assume work layers underneath. If you wear a hoodie or fleece under a jacket, your usual size will fit over it; if you layer heavily, go one up. The caps and watch hats are one-size and make easy top-ups for a team order.

Care is simple: machine wash, skip fabric softener because it degrades the water-repellent finish, and expect duck to soften and fade with use — that is normal wear.
